«When the calabash breaks» is a phrase often used in African cultures to signify a significant disruption or loss, usually related to a breakdown in tradition, community, or a key aspect of life. A calabash is a treasured gourd used for storing water and food, and its breakage represents a major loss or disruption to the household or community; it can also symbolize a loss of life or a significant change in someone's life depending on the context.

«Scratchy beats, cathartic dance. For their first collaboration, Congolese producer Nkisi and South African dancer Tiran Wilemse electrify the space and channel their emotions in an ultra-effective form. Enough to cleanse ourselves of the anxieties of the present.»

Quote translated from the french article by Irene Panzani in Mouvement magazine (18 July 2025).

The project emerges from the encounter and shared research between dancer and choreographer Tiran Willemse and musician and composer Melika Ngombe Kolongo (Nkisi). When the calabash breaks is rooted in spiritual cosmologies and Afro-diasporic rituals, using improvisation as a transformative and political practice. The sound is intense and layered and acts as a living force capable of affecting time and space, while the movement encompasses energetic dimensions, ancestral memory and collective dynamics. Together they create an experimental ritual performance into an explosive weave of music and dance – crafted for historical and present architecture.

About the artists

  • Tiran Willemse is a South African dancer and choreographer based in Zurich. His performance practice carefully examines space, imagination, gesture and sound, and investigates how these elements relate to the construction of gender and memory. He won the Swiss Performance Art Award in 2023 and his works are shown in institutions like Theaterhaus Gessnerallee or ARSENIC - Centre d’arts scénique contemporain as well as festivals abroad like Santarcangelo Festival (blackmilk, 2023 / When the calabash breaks, 2025). His group piece SYNTHETIC/Artefact will be part of the season opening of Gessnerallee 2026/27.

Nkisi is the pseudonym of Melika Ngombe Kolongo, producer, live musician, DJ and curator. Her sound research investigates invisible forces through a captivating mix of African rhythms, European dance and synth melodies. She co-founded the NON WORLDWIDE collective and honed her style between London's Endless parties and NTS residencies. Her album 7 Directions and the EP The Dark Orchestra shaped a powerful and multifaceted sound aesthetic. Nkisi combines international live performances with an interdisciplinary practice that includes installations and performances.
