Dear visitors to Gessnerallee, dear artists

With just under two weeks to go, we’ll be taking a summer break and returning in mid-August. We’re looking forward to the break, but even more so to the next season. Because it’s going to be a cracker.

To help you start planning your autumn at the Gessnerallee now, here is an overview and a few pointers:

The military, the motorway and independent theatre – the history of Gessnerallee

Journalist and photographer Julien Felber embarks on a historical journey through the more than 150-year history of Gessnerallee. From cavalry horses and barracks life, through youth movements and motorway plans, to independent theatre. He is accompanied by Alice Bamberger, a shopkeeper and contemporary witness, whose personal memories weave the history of the building together with that of the city. Read the article

Accessible formats such as ‘relaxed performances’ have opened up theatres and created new avenues of access. But real change will only come about when people with disabilities are not just sitting in the audience, but are making decisions themselves – about programmes, aesthetics and structures. ‘Our bodies are archives’ by Suban Biixi

The two artists Fatima Moumouni and Zainab J Lascandri on their childhoods as Black children and performance as a space for memory and resistance. A conversation about loneliness, invisibility – and the possibility of a different future. Read the article

Furthermore

We are looking for a Communications Intern (60%) to start on 1 November 2026, initially for five months until 31 March 2027 – with the option of extension. The application deadline is 9 August. More information on the job vacancy
