When the masses will it, the world stands still. When many bodies come together, something more than dance emerges: ‘Multitud’ is a powerful, collective dance experience – a unique convergence of energy, presence and movement. In an age of isolation, the shared experience itself becomes a political act.

For this internationally acclaimed piece, Uruguayan choreographer Tamara Cubas brings together around 80 amateur dancers from Zurich. They developed and rehearsed the piece together on site – a section of the city’s community takes to the stage here themselves. They find common ground, breathe and move together – as a collective body.

The result is a pulsating tapestry of rhythm, closeness and intensity, in which individual impulses and collective dynamics are constantly reshaping themselves. ‘Multitud’ is more than a choreography: it is a physical statement about diversity, resistance and collective power – and the energy of an entire city in motion.

The premiere took place in October 2013 at Plaza de Deportes No. 5 in Montevideo, Uruguay.

  • Tamara Cubas is a Uruguayan artist whose production primarily develops within the performing arts, expanding into performance and installation. Her work consistently operates on the body and relationships, understanding artistic practice as a space for encounter, tension, and the collective construction of meaning.

Her research is oriented toward the notion of the Other, driving processes with communities where creation is a shared practice. Her work is nourished by the political processes of Uruguay, traces of which permeate her production.
