Shattering glass, an exploding balloon, or a cracking piece of wood – the familiar sound when something breaks or shatters. But what does it sound like when something is prevented from breaking? In ‘ZER-BRECH-LICH’, choreographer Alessandro Schiattarella  create a performance that moves between music, dance and theatre and engages with fragility and the diversity of bodies.

On stage, three disabled performers, Victoria Antonova, Alice Giuliani and Laila White, navigate different facets of their identities through dance, text, sounds, objects and songs specially written for the piece by Swiss artist Gina Été. They experiment with sounds as if trying on clothes, explore transformation and search for big pop moments. ‘ZER-BRECH-LICH’ asks how engaging with one's own fragility can become a political act, opening up different ways of sensing, perceiving and relating to one another.

  • ZER-BRECH-LICH is a play by Alessandro Schiattarella.

The play shows that things and people can easily break.

It also shows that bodies are different.

Three female artists with disabilities are on stage.

They dance, recite lines, make sounds and sing.

And they seek out special moments reminiscent of pop music.

The Swiss artist Gina Été wrote the songs for the play.

    The play poses questions:

    • Why is it important that something can easily break?

    • How does this open up new possibilities?

    • How can we feel, see and interact with one another differently?

  • Alessandro Schiattarella is a Neapolitan-Swiss choreographer and performer based in Basel. Drawing from his lived experience as a disabled artist, his practice explores the politics of the body and brings disability culture into dialogue with the institutional dance field. After an international career as a dancer with companies including Béjart Ballet Lausanne, Ballett Basel and Scapino Ballet Rotterdam, he developed an interdisciplinary choreographic practice shaped by anti-ableist thinking. His works have been presented internationally at festivals and venues across Europe and beyond.
