‘Art in Conflict – Practice’ is a spin-off of the ‘Art in Conflict’ discussion series. The evening of 20 May will be divided into two parts. At 5.30 p.m., the film ‘The Landscape and the Fury’ will be shown, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker at 8.15 p.m.

‘The Landscape and the Fury’ (Switzerland 2024, 138 min) was made in Ravnice in north-western Bosnia, where mines from the Bosnian War still lie and a European external border runs. Yet amid this landscape, everyday life continues as normal and solidarity reigns among the residents. But how can the absurd story of the 932-kilometre-long EU external border between Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina be told? And how can images be found for violence that expresses itself precisely through its invisibility along a seemingly endless green border? In her own words, Nicole Vögele sought a ‘kaleidoscope of pain in the rustling leaves’ in order to ‘explore this spot on earth, this spot in the soul of the world, through film’.

The event ‘Art in Conflict’ is part of a monthly discussion series that is organised by the Center for Art and Peacebuilding CAP, a joint initiative of artasfoundation and the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK, held at Gessnerallee. Each event will be broadcast live to the media library of the Academy of Art and Design Basel, Freilager-Platz 1, Münchenstein, 8th floor.

  • Art in Conflict is a series of discussions.

    There is one talk per month.

    Experts discuss art projects in countries affected by war.

    Anyone can listen or join in the discussion.

    You can attend in person at the theatre.

    Or you can participate from home via the internet.

    Admission is free.

    Today's event is called Art in Conflict – Practice.

    It consists of two parts:

    At 5.30 p.m., the film The Landscape and the Fury will be shown.

    At 8.15 p.m., there will be a discussion with the director Nicole Vögele.

    The film is set in Ravnice.

    Ravnice is located in north-western Bosnia.

    There are still bombs in the ground from the war.

    The film asks questions:

    • How do you talk about the border between Croatia

      and Bosnia-Herzegovina?

    • How do you show violence that cannot be seen?

  • What can art achieve in regions affected by crisis? How do artists engage in fostering human connections and peaceful conflict transformation, and what are the indispensable conditions for this?
    The ‘Art in Conflict’ discussion series explores fundamental questions of international peacebuilding through dialogues with practitioners and scholars from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. In informal conversations – usually featuring two guests – various aspects of this work are discussed, drawing on both practical experiences and theoretical reflections. The discussions are moderated by the team of artasfoundation, the Swiss foundation for art in conflict regions, which has been initiating and organising art projects since 2012.

    The series is presented in partnership with the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), the Mediathek of HGK Basel, and Theater Gessnerallee Zürich.
