«Undercover-Journalismus: Einblicke in verdeckte Recherchen»
REFLEKT Recherche-Team

Regular discussion series organised by Gessnerallee in cooperation with editorial teams. Once a month, an editorial team selects a key journalistic topic and shares it live with the audience. This time, the topic is undercover investigation methods.

The lobby of a five-star hotel in Geneva. A solicitor explains how alleged corruption money can be hidden. What he doesn't know is that a hidden camera is rolling. A few months later, the REFLEKT publication ‘Türöffner der Korruption’ (Door Openers for Corruption) reveals how willingly Swiss consultants help to conceal dirty money.

How does undercover research work? What are the risks involved – legally, personally, journalistically? And what surprising or absurd situations do you encounter in the process? Journalists from REFLEKT and the weekly newspaper WOZ provide insight into an otherwise hidden world based on current undercover research.

Following a highly publicised court ruling, investigations using hidden cameras declined sharply. Today, they are being used again with caution – at REFLEKT as well as at WOZ, which recently revealed how tax authorities court wealthy individuals with tips on tax optimisation. In times of growing opacity, this method is regaining importance.

Information about the host

REFLEKT, Switzerland's first independent and non-profit research team, was founded in 2019. Since then, a small, powerful team has been carrying out major research with a big impact. In order to uncover abuses and promote transparency, they focus on investigative research projects lasting several months, which traditional editorial teams are increasingly unable to handle. By presenting their work in an attractive way and publishing it via various channels, they make their work accessible to the widest possible audience. In this way, they promote quality in journalism, increase public awareness and contribute to media diversity and a functioning democracy.
