This conversation centres on the young people who took part in the theatre project ICH.KRIEG.DIE.KRISE. The premiere in May 2026 was preceded by a several-month writing and performance workshop on the themes of war, crisis, and militarisation. Drawing on their own experiences, fears, questions, and visions of the future, the young participants collectively developed a theatre piece about growing up in a time of global crises

In this conversation, they reflect on their artistic process and on how they, as young people, perceive war and growing social tensions. What role can theatre play when feelings of powerlessness and uncertainty grow? And what hopes do young people have for the future?

A conversation about socially engaged art from the perspective of young people who are often the subject of public debate, and who speak for themselves here.

Simon Labhart, Markus Strobl, and the young participants of the theatre production ICH.KRIEG.DIE.KRISE will be present on site.

The event ‘Art in Conflict’ is part of a monthly discussion series that is organised by artasfoundation in cooperation with Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK, through their joint initiative CAP. The events are held at Gessnerallee and will be broadcast live to the media library of the Academy of Art and Design Basel, Freilager-Platz 1, Münchenstein, 8th floor

  • Art in Conflict is a series of discussions.

There is a discussion every month.

Experts talk about art projects in countries affected by war.

Everyone is welcome to listen or join in the discussion.

You can take part at the theatre.

Or you can take part from home via the internet.

    Admission is free.

This discussion features theatre makers Simon Labhart and Markus Strobl.

They will be talking about the theatre project: Ich krieg die Krise.

It means: I’m very angry and stressed.

The project was created with young people.

The young people will also be taking part in the discussion.

In the project, the young people discussed various topics.

For example, war, crisis and militarisation.

Militarisation means: there are more soldiers and weapons in everyday life.

    The young people asked themselves:

What does it mean to grow up in a time full of crises?

    In the discussion, they explain:

    • How did they create the play?

    • How do they feel about it?

  • What can art achieve in regions affected by crisis? How do artists engage in fostering human connections and peaceful conflict transformation, and what are the indispensable conditions for this?
The ‘Art in Conflict’ discussion series explores fundamental questions of international peacebuilding through dialogues with practitioners and scholars from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. In informal conversations – usually featuring two guests – various aspects of this work are discussed, drawing on both practical experiences and theoretical reflections. The discussions are moderated by the team of artasfoundation, the Swiss foundation for art in conflict regions, which has been initiating and organising art projects since 2012.

The series is presented in partnership with the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), the Mediathek of HGK Basel, and Theater Gessnerallee Zürich.
