Waltzing with a difference: as part of Steps, Basel-based choreographer Johanna Heusser has created a 15- to 20-minute duet from her existing piece ‘valse, valse, valse’ that takes place away from the classical stage. Framed by a participatory, approximately 40-minute workshop, the short version provides a playful introduction to the art of waltz dancing. A mini dance class for everyone!

May I have this dance? The waltz has a wild past. Its turns put dancers into a trance-like state. Reason enough to ban it in some places. Today, it seems tame – associated with ballroom glamour, weddings, dreams of Sissi and social status. How can the original potential of the waltz be rediscovered? Johanna Heusser provides an insight into the basic steps of the waltz – alone and in pairs – and shows how turning in ¾ time also works outside a heteronormative narrative or a couple's logic. People with or without waltz experience are all welcome.

‘valse, valse, valse – short version’ is presented as part of the Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps.
