Walking, running, staggering, stumbling, dragging oneself along: what sounds like simple locomotion to walking humans becomes the central subject of investigation in Sphynx. In her award-winning choreography, Swiss choreographer Rafaële Giovanola, together with fourteen dancers from tanzmainz, explores the seemingly endless and fascinating universe of the human musculoskeletal system.

What sounds simple has a captivating pull. Sphynx is not only a study of movement, but a thoughtful declination of the locomotion of mobile humans – implemented with precision and extreme consistency.

And there is no shortage of imagination: great dance ingenuity meets the individual subtleties of each individual body on stage.

Sphynx was awarded the German Theater Prize DER FAUST in 2022. The choreographer behind this prestigious award is a familiar face at Steps: Rafaële Giovanola was already part of the festival in 2022 with her own company CocoonDance.

‘Sphynx’ is presented as part of the Migros Culture Percentage Dance Festival Steps.
