‘Woven’ is a theater project exploring transracial adoption through lived experience, music, and performance. Earlier this year, the project brought together adult transracial adoptees for a two-day creative workshop.

As the project has evolved, it has become increasingly important to create a similar space for children and young people whose perspectives are often missing from discussions about transracial adoption. Many transracially adopted children grow up without regularly having the opportunity to meet other adopted children with similar experiences.

This workshop offers them the opportunity to connect with one another, be creative together, and spend time with each other in a supportive and open atmosphere. Through games, artistic expression, storytelling, creative activities, and group discussions, the participating children and young people have the chance to explore topics such as identity, belonging, family, culture, and connection in an engaging and age-appropriate way.

There is absolutely no expectation that participants will share personal experiences. The children should participate in whatever way feels comfortable and right for them.

The workshop includes:

• creative activities and art-making

• games and group activities

• opportunities for conversation and reflection

• connecting with other transracially adopted children and young people
